Overview
We proposed to give the box a permeable and animated envelope where the activities taking place inside can be showcased and can interact with urban activity. We created a “deep wall” system or an inhabitable facade where new programmatic options can be explored, blurring the line between inside and outside to give the users and pedestrians a more interactive experience. The facade consists of three layers of hexagonal structure which hang 2.3 meters off the edge of the existing structure. The layers of hexagonal structure create a dynamic facade that changes as one moves past it.

Our Role
Studio NYL provided facade consulting and specialty structural engineering services
Approach
We engineered a glazing system that is integrated into the hexagonal structure using veneer extrusions to avoid duplication of structure, and yield cost savings. The offset structure is maintained by extruded hexagons and outriggers, which transfer vertical and lateral load back to the existing structure. The facade elements are all hung from the roof to enable the members to be lighter and more elegant.
What We’re Proudest Of This project has one of the best series of details we have completed for an enclosure. The facade bridges two eras of structure that are seismically independent. As a result, the enclosure required an expansion joint that follows the hexagonal geometry and supports a ½ meter of movement in all directions while disappearing into the architecture.
