Giving back

We aspire to engineer a better future.

We don’t just do good by our clients and partners—it’s important to us to use our skills, expertise, and passion to serve communities, the environment, and advance the engineering profession.

Serving communities

In-kind projects

We offer services and expertise to projects that have a unique impact and social purpose and are particularly passionate about using these projects as a catalyst for community self-sufficiency and economic empowerment. For example, we have worked closely with Pyatt Studio on several projects in collaboration with Native American reservations on projects that reduce the cost of housing and create local job opportunities.

Buildings for social change

We share simple yet elegant solutions that improve communities and have an impact on how people experience art, culture, social, or educational opportunities. Studio NYL has supported the development of art and education facilities as diverse as the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art, to the Balanda School Complex in South Sudan. We engaged with global architects and engineers to develop multiple temporary art pieces across Denver as part of the Biennial of the Americas.

Serving the profession

Education and training

We are active in multiple organizations and are committed to inspiring and educating the next generation. Julian Lineham is a member of the Denver Architectural Foundation’s Cleworth Architectural Legacy Program, leading outreach to K-12 classrooms about careers in architecture and engineering. He also serves on the AIA Mentorship Committee in Denver and North Colorado. Both Julian and Chris O'Hara are guest lecturers at CU Boulder and Denver, and Chris has taught at the Faye Jones Architectural School at the University of Arkansas in collaboration with Marlon Blackwell Architects.

Boards and commissions

Studio NYL is involved with multiple industry organizations including AIA, Facades+, Facade Tectonics, Structural Engineering Certification Board, Boston Society of Architects, Structural Engineers Association of Colorado, the Building Enclosure Council, and ASTM. Through leadership roles, the Studio NYL team shares their expertise and helps to advance codes, standards, and practices that collectively move the engineering profession forward.

Research and development

We pioneer new systems and materials and freely share our intellectual capital with our partners and the industry at large through regular conference speaking opportunities, industry lectures, and publications.

“Studio NYL has been an invaluable participant in our Architectural Technology program for a number of years. They have sponsored internships, become active and contributing members of our Advisory Board, and travel to campus every semester. Our success as a program is dependent on the kind of professional mentorship and support Studio NYL has consistently provided.”

- Mark S. Broyles, Associate Professor and Department Chair at Community College of Denver
