Facades

Skin is about more than a building’s facade.

The Skins Group is a division of Studio NYL that specializes in full-service facade design including thermal meddling, moisture/condensation analysis, in-depth detailing and more.

We make buildings stand out.

Today modern skin or enclosure technology is as much about performance as appearance. Building skins provide proactive controls against the environment—as in thermal comfort, moisture control, sun penetration, etc.—just as a human skin serves as a filter to the external environment, monitoring temperature and controlling moisture.

The Skins Group is engaged by architects, building design teams, and contractors around the world to provide expertise on challenging systems—empowering architects to push the boundaries on design through the proactive integration of structural and building science services.

We make buildings perform

We are most recognized for work on cutting-edge glass and glazing, the team also specializes in digitally fabricated metal skins and facades, GFRC, reinforced polymers, stone, ultra high performance concrete, fabrics, terra cotta, and traditional precast—using multiple modeling and analysis software platforms.

The firm does its best work when designing the building and skin together. This allows the facade to be integrated within the building systems, which accomplishes greater efficiencies and more elegant design details.

“More than using new materials, we care about how these materials can be assembled and finished using the local means available to us. We are not tied to a material palette. We are willing to creatively explore what’s best for each project.”
