Carbon Fiber Reinforcement

Studio NYL has been utilizing Carbon Fiber Reinforcement to re-use existing structures. Many historic structures do not meet modern design standards. Typically this would make them poor candidates for adaptive re-use but by strengthening floor and lateral systems with Carbon Fiber, we are able to save many of these buildings and eliminate the waste of demolishing them.

Spanish Peaks Library, Walsenburg, CO

Architect: Studiotrope

Description: The existing building, designed as the Huerfano County High School in 1911, is being converted into the Spanish Peaks Library. This change of use required strengthening of the structural floors to accommodate increased library stack loads. Carbon fiber strengthening, consisting of bonding carbon fiber strips to the underside of the existing concrete, was used to minimize the impact and to avoid demolition of the historic fabric of the building.
